From the vault: Easy win for Sydney (28 April, 1894)

on Mon, 10/03/2016 - 01:38

The rich history and tradition of the Australian Boat Race is captured in print by the Brisbane Courier in their race report from 1894.

The electric telegraph was singing the news of Sydney University’s success on the waters of Parramatte River in the eighth annual intercolonial University boat race.

As reported, the Victorians took an early lead but were soon overhauled by the Sydneysiders who went on to win by ten boat-lengths in a time of 17mins 19secs. The full course stretched from Ryde Wharf to The Brothers. Spectators included the Governor, Premier, and their offical party.

History lives on with the 2016 edition of the Australian Boat Race scheduled for Sunday, 23 October on Sydney Harbour. All interested parties are welcome to come and catch the action on the big screen at Darling Harbour for FREE.
